Ontario latest draw 2018 held on 19 October, saw 439 more candidates given ITAs (Invitations to Apply) under the Skilled Trades Stream.
This made it one of the biggest immigration draws seen in the province, boosting up the total number of NOIs (Notifications of Interests) by 1,445 candidates.
What Is the Skilled Trades Stream?
The Skilled Trades Stream or STS is a subcategory under the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program. It is one of the ways to qualify for permanent residence in Canada.
Requirements for the Ontario Skilled Trades Stream
|Have at least one year of work experience in Ontario;|
|Have a job with NOC code under 633 or under a major group 72, 73 or 82 of the NOC (National Occupational Classification);|
|Have enough money to settle in the province with your dependants;|
|Have your trade certificated by the Ontario College of Trades if your occupation requires it;|
|Have a valid work permit or temporary residence in the country;|
|Have a score of at least 5 on the Canadian Language Benchmark for English and French; and|
|Have plans to live and work in the province|
How to Apply for the Ontario Skilled Trades Program
There are four main steps you must follow in order to apply for the Ontario Skilled Trades Program.
Step 1 - you must create an online Express Entry profile on the Canadian immigration website to get your unique Express Entry Profile Number and Job Seeker Validation Code. Then you can use this to apply for the Ontario Immigration Nominee Program, making sure you express your interest in the province.
Step 2 - get a Notification of Interest from the province if you meet all of the requirements listed in the table above. You can then apply for the OINP under the Skilled Trades Stream.
Step 3 - begin your application for the OINP when you get your Notification of Interest. Make sure you apply within 45 days of getting your NOI. You can do this on the OINP e-filing portal where you can upload all the necessary documents. Please be aware that the application costs for the OINP is CAD$1,500 and it’s non refundable. You will be assessed under the Skilled Trades Stream and if your application is successful, you will get a Nomination.
Step 4 - after your application is approved by Ontario, you will get a letter from the province to show you have been nominated. You must apply within 30 days to accept this nomination. This nomination will give you an additional 600 Comprehensive Ranking System score for Express Entry (EE).
If you meet all the requirements under EE, you will get an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence in Ontario. Make sure that you apply within 60 days to the IRCC for permanent residency or you will have to start the application process again.
Other Draws in Ontario
This wasn’t the only draw that Ontario had on the 19th of October, the province also invited 39 people through the French Speaking Skilled Worker Stream (FSSWS). Together these two draws took the total number of applicants under this stream to 1,316 this year.

|Have at least one year of work experience under either the Federal Skilled Workers Program or the Canadian Experience Class;|
|Have a Bachelor’s degree at least;|
|Have scored at least a 7 in the Canadian Language Benchmark for French and 6 for English;|
|Have enough money to support yourself and any family that comes with you to Ontario;|
|Have plans to live and work in Ontario; and|
|Have legal status in Ontario as a temporary resident, worker or student|
