6-must see attractions on the weekend for students

Weekends provide the opportunity for local and foreign students to really get out and explore their surroundings. Canada has some of the best activities out there so if you are looking to tick some items off your bucket list, then we suggest you grab your camera and head for the open road.

1. Visit a maple syrup farm

Canadians love maple syrup, in fact, it is one of their most consumed food items! So it is no wonder that there are activities dedicated to this sweet and sticky food group. Take a drive to one of the many farms in your area and enjoy pancakes, waffles and bacon smothered in maple syrup. Some farms even have drinks made of syrup, so we suggest you grab a cup and explore the farm while learning how this sweet treat is made.

These farms are littered around the country and even host festivals at different times of the year.

2. Sail down the river on Niagara Falls, Ontario

As the most famous attraction in Canada, there is no way that you cannot have this activity on your to-do list. You can fight the crowds at the top of the falls or you can take a leisurely boat trip down the river while enjoying a 3-course meal. All aboard the Niagara Belle, a beautifully restored paddle wheeler which chugs down Lower Niagara River and gives visitors ample opportunity to take in the sunset while enjoying a few drinks and snacks.

If that’s a little slow for your liking and you are looking for something a bit more adventurous, then we suggest that you hit the waves on a jet boat. These tours will have you racing through the water on high-speed boats while getting completely soaked for an hour.

The falls are located less than 2 hours away from The University of Toronto, so we recommend taking a day trip out there and spending time exploring the area.

3. The CN Tower, Toronto – not for those with a fear of heights!

You may know the CN Tower as that extremely tall building that has defined the Toronto landscape for many years, but what you may not know is that it is also offers the best views of the area. All the way at the top of the tower which stands at 356m/1,168ft above the ground, you can strap yourself in and suspend yourself over the edge of the tower. Yes, really. Every year, thousands of adrenaline-seeking visitors enjoy the view from the top of the tower with a 30-minute walk around the edge.

You can even receive a certificate of achievement for completing the walk, as well as plenty of photos to prove you were there!

4. Visit the cobbled streets of Europe in Old Quebec, Montreal

If you are looking for a bit of history and culture, then look no further than Old Quebec. This beautifully preserved maze of streets is over 400 years old and leads to many sights that appear as if they are straight out of a fairytale. For the best views over the city, visit Dufferin Terrace, one of the many castles that stand looking over the river. In the Petit-Champlain District, horse-drawn carriages are a common sight with pedestrians taking a stroll along the cobbled streets into the heart of the historical city.

5. Take a road trip!

There are so many road trips that we can recommend in Canada, but there is nothing quite like the scenic drive to Icefields Parkway in Alberta. This stretch of 232km through the heart of the Canadian Rockies is a journey of a lifetime with endless stretches of pristine lakes, glaciers and sweeping valleys along the way. Hikes to the waterfalls and canoeing along the rivers are a must!

6. Get out and about in Vancouver along the Seawall!

28kms of uninterrupted waterfront path provide the perfect stretch of solitude for those stressed-out students who need a study break. Winding its way along the coastline, this pathway is filled with people jogging, walking and cycling in the warmer months. Of course, there are plenty of restaurants and picnic spots along the way and if you are wanting to do an ambitious hike, there is a 22km trail that runs alongside the main pathway.

So what are you waiting for? It’s time to explore your new home and make some new memories!
