If you’re from Ireland and wish to have a holiday in Canada and make extra cash at the same time, this read is just for you. Perhaps it’s the luck of the Irish, but did you know that Ireland has not maxed out its annual quota of working holiday visas for 2022 yet? Finding out how to get a Canadian working holiday visa from Ireland has never been easier with this guide.
Obtain a Working Holiday Visa from Ireland
Who wouldn’t want to earn extra cash while being on holiday in a foreign country? The Working Holiday Visa, also known as IEC (International Experience Class), gives you the option to live and work in Canada..
Do you meet the requirements?
Here are the minimum requirements for the working holiday visa if you’re from Ireland:
- Be a citizen of Ireland
- Possess an Irish Passport that will expire after your Working Holiday Visa
- Be between the ages of 18 to 35
- Proof of $2,500 CAD equivalent (or more in savings)
- Have health insurance during your entire stay
- Have a round-trip ticket to present on arrival, or be financially able to purchase on at the end of the working holiday
You are required to have supporting documents and upload them as part of your application for the working holiday visa. Your police clearance record should be uploaded during this time as well. Most countries need to have a police clearance record, but not all of them are required to provide one.
The police clearance record is simply to show that you have no criminal history, and cannot be older than six months.
For the entire duration of your stay you are required to have health insurance. This means that whether you’re staying for six months or 24 months, you will have to take out health insurance to cover you for that period of time. You will need to purchase health insurance before your arrival in Canada. You cannot extend your health insurance once you get into Canada.
An important tip to note is that if you take out health insurance for a shorter amount of time other than your work permit states, the immigration officer is allowed to cut the duration of your stay down to the amount of time that you have health insurance.
Biometrics are personal identifiers which will either be your photo or fingerprints taken. To apply for your application you have to submit your biometric documents otherwise you will be refused access by immigration officers.
The most important part of the process is to create a profile on the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website. You will be added into a pool of applicants from which your name could potentially be drawn. This entry pool works on a first come, first serve basis.
Keep in mind that there are specific instructions on how to get a working holiday visa from Ireland, as well as each country, so be sure to follow them carefully.
When you are a selected candidate, you will get an invitation to apply for the IEC. If you take longer than 10 days to accept the invitation, your invitation will not be valid anymore. After you accept the invitation you only have 20 days to apply for your open work permit online.
If you do not respond within the given time frames you will have to open a new profile and re-enter the draw, and try to get accepted. This program does not save your details so you will have to reapply when you miss important dates. If you do decide to decline the invitation for personal reasons, it will not affect your future applications.
Here is the list of all the documentation you will need to submit with your application:
Proof of financial support
Police clearance certificate
Family information form
Digital photo of yourself
Which season do you want to work in?
Summertime is considered the best time to travel through Canada to enjoy it’s rich lush scenery, and road trips that feel like a never ending romance novel. Popular jobs in Canada during summer include harvesters on farms, camp counselors, and delivery drivers.
Traveling while you work is the main idea behind a working holiday visa, so you will always be travelling somewhere. Costs in Canada are so affordable that it would cost more to hire a car than to rent one. So if you’re working there for longer than 12 months, a secondhand car would cost you roughly about $4,500 which you could always opt to sell at the end of your trip to cover some of your costs.
Canadian winters sound like a dream. Snow-covered mountains, warm poutine and hot chocolate in front of the fireplace, and the best part? A plethora of jobs in ski resorts, hotels and restaurants. This definitely sounds like one of the best ways to live and work in Canada.
Don’t forget to pack extremely warm as temperatures up north usually hit above -15. It’s not best advised to take road trips during the winter unless you have chains on your tyres.
Can you apply for a Canada working holiday visa twice?
Irish citizens will be able to obtain a working holiday visa more than once if they applied after 2013. If you participated in IEC before 2013 for a period of up to 12 months, you are eligible for a second participation of up to 24 months in the category of your choice. Those who participated in IEC more than once before 2013 are no longer eligible to apply. You may however only apply for the working holiday category once, but may be able to apply for the co-op or internship category if you are eligible.
How much money will I earn in Canada? How will I get paid?
Every province in Canada has a different wage per hour. In general, however, it‘s estimated that you will earn about $15 or above for an hour's worth of work. In Canada, it’s the norm to get bi-weekly pay. Some programs deduct rent for housing if it's stated in the contract, bringing your amount for the month down substantially.
What is the maximum age limit to work in Canada on a working holiday visa?
The maximum age limit to work in Canada on a working holiday visa is 35. If you are 35 when submitting your profile into the pool and turn 36 before getting your Invitation To Apply (ITA), you will not be eligible to apply. However, If you apply before your 36th birthday and receive your ITA just before you turn 36, you will be eligible for the working holiday program.
How long is the processing time for a working holiday visa?
The processing time is usually eight weeks, but due to the pandemic it could take a while longer. IRCC is also only selecting a few candidates from the entry pool at a time to not overwhelm themselves with an influx of applications at once.
If you’ve read up on how to get a Canadian working holiday visa from Ireland and aren’t considering it, you definitely should. There’s a lot of healthy competition from different countries, and the earlier you decide to apply, the better your chances are to earn while you work.
