The Surrey campus, which is set on the traditional territories of q̓íc̓əy̓ (Katzie), kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem), Qayqayt, Kwantlen, Semiahmoo and Tsawwassen peoples, opened in 2002. This campus is home to the university's cutting-edge initiatives and programs.

SFU was named after Simon Fraser, a Scottish explorer and fur trader who played a significant role in the development of Western Canada.
