Second Targeted Express Entry Draw Invites 500 Skilled Trades Workers

500 skilled-trade workers got express entry into Canada, in the 128th Express Entry draw, held on October 16. This is the second targeted draw this year since it was created in 2015, issuing Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residence to candidates with a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 357 and higher. The previous draw took place on May 15, 2019, and had scored as low as 332.

The skilled worker shortage in Canada has led the government to create various immigration programs to assist with filling the current labour gap. In this draw, trades such as electricians, welders and mechanics were among the top occupations selected from the list of jobs currently in demand in Canada. Other occupations currently in demand in Canada, that fall under the Skilled Worker Trade Program, include construction managers, powerline technicians, oil and gas driller, pipefitters, plumbers and carpenters. The best part about the Federal Skilled Worker Program is that you can speed up your visa application processing time by creating an Express Entry profile.

Applying through the Express Entry system fast-tracks your applications making it more accessible and simpler for foreign nationals to gain entry in Canada. Applicants can apply through one of 3 federal programs: The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSTP), the Canada Experience Class (CEC) or the Federal Skilled Trades Program. This draw, however, excluded the FSTP and CEC and focused on the latter, confirming that Canada not only needs highly skilled but, skilled trade workers too. The best part about applying through the Express Entry system is that companies are able to select suitable applicants from the draw pools, increasing your chance of getting permanent residence in Canada. Companies are also more likely to select applicants who use a paid Canadian immigration service rather than a candidate who has applied on their own, as this guarantees that the submitted documents have been verified. But before you apply, let's look at what the Skilled Trades Worker Program is and whether or not this is the right immigration program for you.

The Federal Skilled Worker Program

More than half of immigrants in Canada are skilled workers, invited to Canada through the Federal Skilled Worker Programs, one of which is the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP).   • A certification in a specific trade;
  • 2 years of full-time work experience or equivalent in part-time work in their certified trade, within a 5 year period before applying for a visa

Applicants also need to be qualified in one of the following trade groups:
