Lower Income Requirements for Family Sponsorship to Canada!

The coronavirus has without a doubt had an effect in areas of life whether it be unemployment, health or in your case your immigration plans to sponsor a loved one to join you in Canada

The financial strain that many people are faced with would prevent many from possibly being able to bring their spouse, common-law partner, dependent, parents or grandparent to Canada due to the usual 30 per cent increase on the minimum income requirement.

“As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the income requirement for the 2020 tax year will be more difficult for some sponsors to meet,” read Mendicino’s instructions, “This could result in otherwise eligible permanent residence applicants having their application refused, including both current and future applicants in the family class whose sponsor must meet a minimum income requirement.”

Minister of Immigration, Marco Mendicino

The Government has taken this into account and has implemented a temporary public policy for family class applicants, which states that new measures have been put in place to help those who wish to apply for family sponsorship to Canada. The following changes have been made for the 2020 taxation year and have been in effect since October 2, 2020.

  • No increase in 2020 taxation year;
  • Regular Employment Insurance (EI) Benefits counts towards income calculations;

It is, however, important to note that this only applies to the 2020 taxation year which means that the minimum income increase requirements for previous years still apply. This exception will also only be in effect until all eligible applicants have been processed

These measures also do not apply to those who wish to sponsor family members to live with them in Quebec. For more information on income requirements for family sponsorship in Quebec, you can visit the Provincial website here.
