The internet is littered with Canadian immigration websites offering so-called free evaluations and assessments. Naturally, such a claim drums up quite a bit of interest from hopefuls who dream of coming to Canada. What many people don’t realize is how deceptive online claims can be. Promises of free services are easily used as ploys to trick people into trusting the companies offering them. Chances are these assessments aren’t as comprehensive or “free” as they first appear because, let's face it, businesses exist to make money. For this reason, we have decided to investigate the differences between paid and free Canadian immigration assessments.
How Comprehensive is the Assessment?
There are over 70 different Canadian immigration programs and visa categories and each of these has its own unique set of criteria. It takes a great deal of time and in-depth knowledge of the system to figure out which ones you actually qualify for. If a free assessment promises that they will determine your eligibility for all of these programs, you should highly doubt this claim.
We signed up for several of these “free assessments” and only received immediate results for the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), managed by the Express Entry system, even though the assessments claimed to evaluate you for the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) as well. It may very well be the case that your profile isn't strong enough to qualify for Express Entry but, thanks to your particular work experience, it is sufficient to qualify for one of several nominee categories. For this reason, you need to know about all of your immigration options when you decide to apply.
We also noticed that some of the free assessment results mentioned that they will assist clients with provincial nominations but only after they paid the first installment of their service fees.
These free assessments are not comprehensive because they typically only evaluate you for one immigration program, limiting your insight into your real immigration options. If you want to know about all the routes you can take to Canada, you will have to look into paid evaluations that give you a complete eligibility report.
Is it Really Free?
Technically speaking yes, free assessments are — free. However, as previously mentioned, they only scratch the surface of your immigration options. They might reveal one or two categories, but you will have to start paying for different packages to get them to start considering other programs like the Provincial Nominee Program.
Paid for evaluations are of course not free but you will most likely receive more comprehensive results. There are also no hidden costs involved, which means you get exactly what you paid for.
Is Advice Included?
Immigration lawyers and other immigration consultants typically have pretty steep fees, which is why the advice they offer for free can only be surface level. A free assessment won’t explain to clients how they can improve their profile and it won’t have any personal advice catered to your unique background and needs. So perhaps you receive your results and you discover that your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score is too low to receive an Invitation to Apply, does that mean you should give up on your dreams of coming to Canada? Of course not! There are several things you can do to improve your profile and there are many other immigration programs that you could qualify for.
Paid immigration evaluations take that extra step to help you come to Canada. Not only do they reveal all of your immigration options but they also make recommendations to maximize your chances of coming to Canada.
