Minors in Canada will only pay C$100 to apply for citizenship as opposed to the usual C$530. The reason for the reduction in application fees follows the legislative amendment that removed the requirement to be 18 years old to apply for Canadian citizenship.
“We encourage all immigrants, including those under 18 years of age, to take the path to Canadian citizenship and benefit from permanently belonging in Canadian society,” says Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Ahmed Hussen. “We are pleased that these fee changes will further facilitate access to citizenship for minors and reduce the financial burden for potentially vulnerable children.”
Do you qualify to apply for Canadian Citizenship?
Scenario 1: Minor (under the age of 18) has a Canadian parent or a parent who is applying for citizenship at the same time:
- Minor must be a permanent resident;
- Minor does not need to meet language and knowledge requirements;
- Minor did not need to physically be present in Canada for three out of the last 5 years;
- Minors do not need to file income tax;
- If the minor is 14+ years of age, he/she is required to take the Oath of Citizenship; and
- A parent or a person who has custody of the minor must sign the application form. Minor 14+ years of age must also sign the application form.
Scenario 2: Minor (under the age of 18) does not have a Canadian parent or a parent who is applying for citizenship at the same time:
- Minor must be a permanent resident;
- Minor does not need to meet language and knowledge requirements;
- Minor must have been physically present in Canada for three out of the last 5 years;
- Minor does need to file income tax if required to do so by CRA;
- If the minor is 14+ years of age, he/she is required to take the Oath of Citizenship; and
- Minor 14+ years of age must sign application form AND a person who has custody of the minor must also sign. However, the requirement can be waived.
