How Can I Get a Canadian Work Permit?

Any foreign national will need to obtain a work permit in order to legally work in Canada. The type of visa you get will depend on the occupation you’ll be doing in Canada. Canada has two main types of work visas that you may qualify for. They are:

  1. Open work permit; and
  2. Employer-specific work permit.

The main difference between the two visas is that you can work anywhere in Canada and for any employer with an open work permit whereas you will have certain limitations with an employer-specific work permit. This includes the position you’ll be working for and the employer you’d be working for.

Canadian programs to obtain an open work permit

You can get an open work visa through programs such as the Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWP).

Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWP)

The Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWP) allow you to live and work in Canada via an open work visa. This visa is a great way to gain Canadian work experience in your field of study and you won’t be limited to a certain employer or location in Canada.

To have an open work permit in Canada means that you don’t need a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). This is a document that states there aren’t any Canadian citizens or permanent residents to fill a certain role.

Your permit will generally be valid for eight months to three years, this will depend on how long your study program was.

Am I eligible for a PGWP?

You’ll need to meet the following requirements to be eligible for a PGWP:

  • Studied full-time in Canada in a study program that’s at least 8 months long;
  • The tertiary school must be a Designated Learning Institute (DLI);
  • Have an official letter from the school that you have met all the criteria of the study program; and
  • Have or had an eligible study permit.

Please note that you need to apply for your PGWP within 180 days after you have completed your qualification.

A great advantage to you when working in Canada through the PGWP is that it will open many doors for you when it comes to immigrating to Canada. By gaining Canadian working experience of your PGWP you may be eligible to apply for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) via Express Entry.

Canadian programs to obtain an employer-specific permit

To receive an employer-specific visa you can apply through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP).

Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP)

The Canadian government has created the Temporary Foreign Worker Programto allow employers to hire foreign skilled workers for various jobs. The main factor that employers need to ensure is that they apply for an LMIA before hiring you for the position.

There are several streams that fall under the TFWP, these include the Agriculture Worker Stream, the Global Talent Stream (GTS) and the Home Care Provider Stream.

Global Talent Stream (GTS)

The Global Talent Stream (GTS) is a way of bringing highly skilled foreign workers into the Canadian workforce. Before a Canadian employer can hire the skilled workers they need, such as yourself, they’ll need to provide an LMIA to prove that it cannot be filled within Canada by citizens or permanent residents of Canada.

There are two categories wherein the employer can hire foreign nationals. They are:

  1. Category A - for employers who are referred to the GTS by designated partner organizations; and
  2. Category B - for employers who need to hire foreign skilled workers that are on the Global Talent List.

Examples of occupations listed on the Global Talent List include computer and information systems managers, computer engineers and information systems analysts.
