- Open work permit; and
- Employer-specific work permit.
The main difference between the two visas is that you can work anywhere in Canada and for any employer with an open work permit whereas you will have certain limitations with an employer-specific work permit. This includes the position you’ll be working for and the employer you’d be working for.

You can get an open work visa through programs such as the Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWP).
Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWP)
The Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWP) allow you to live and work in Canada via an open work visa. This visa is a great way to gain Canadian work experience in your field of study and you won’t be limited to a certain employer or location in Canada.
To have an open work permit in Canada means that you don’t need a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). This is a document that states there aren’t any Canadian citizens or permanent residents to fill a certain role.
Your permit will generally be valid for eight months to three years, this will depend on how long your study program was.
Am I eligible for a PGWP?
You’ll need to meet the following requirements to be eligible for a PGWP:
- Studied full-time in Canada in a study program that’s at least 8 months long;
- The tertiary school must be a Designated Learning Institute (DLI);

To receive an employer-specific visa you can apply through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP).

Global Talent Stream (GTS)
The Global Talent Stream (GTS) is a way of bringing highly skilled foreign workers into the Canadian workforce. Before a Canadian employer can hire the skilled workers they need, such as yourself, they’ll need to provide an LMIA to prove that it cannot be filled within Canada by citizens or permanent residents of Canada.
There are two categories wherein the employer can hire foreign nationals. They are:
