1. Express Entry

Express Entry is one of the largest entryways into Canada and one of the quickest. Many foreign nationals choose to enter Canada via Express Entry because of the program's many advantages. They are:

The Express Entry system has three programs

This means your chance of success is higher as you could qualify for one of three programs. The programs are as follows:

  1. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) - this program is for those who can contribute to the Canadian economy with their skills, work experience or qualifications.
  2. Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) - this program is for foreign nationals who wish to immigrate to Canada with work experience in eligible trade occupations.
  3. Canadian Experience Class (CEC) - this program is for foreign nationals who have gained work experience in Canada and want to apply for permanent residency.

Quick processing times

Express Entry is known for its incredibly fast processing times, you could have your Invitation to Apply (ITA) within six months.

Minimum requirements

A great advantage of Express Entry is that you don’t need to have a job offer as a requirement, which is often a requirement for most Canadian visa programs. However, a job offer will certainly aid you in having a successful application.

How does the Express Entry system work?

Once deemed eligible, you’ll be placed into the Express Entry pool along with other successful candidates. Here you’ll receive your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score which is used to rank your profile within the pool.

Express Entry draws will happen as frequently as every two weeks. You'll receive an ITA if your CRS score meets or exceeds the qualifying score. If you aren’t successful within the first draw, your profile will stay in the pool for up to 12 months. While waiting, you can improve your CRS score in several ways and increase your chances to immigrate to Canada from Jamaica in 2022

It’s important to know that you’ll only have 60 days to complete and submit your Canadian permanent residency application as well as all necessary documentation. The 60 days will begin the day you receive your ITA.

2. Provincial Nominee Program

If you have a particular province in Canada you’d like to move to then the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is for you. Local provinces in Canada have an agreement with the Canadian government that allows the provinces to nominate foreign nationals to settle permanently in a particular province. Of course, you will need to have the skills, work experience, or education needed by the province’s labour market or economy.

Applying for a Provincial Nomination

You have two choices when applying for a nomination. You can either apply directly to the province of your choice or you can apply through the Express Entry. Going through the Express Entry will be a much faster process and will save you plenty of time.

Did you know that most PNP streams have a relatively low CRS cut-off score? Alberta has one of the lowest CRS cut-off scores at 300 points. This means that by just having a nomination, which gives you 600 points, you’ll surely secure an ITA.

3. Family Sponsorship

If you have family in Canada, this Canadian visa program could be for you. In 2022, Canada plans to welcome 105,000 foreign nationals through the Family Sponsorship program. If you’d like to become a permanent resident through this program, you’ll need to be sponsored by your family member living in Canada. A sponsor needs to be:

  • a Canadian citizen;
  • 18 years of age or older; and
  • they need to live in Canada.

Please note that receiving permanent residency through the Family Sponsorship can take some time as the applications can take anywhere between 12-24 months long.

4. Work in Canada

Did you know that working in Canada can lead to immigrating to Canada? There are several Canadian work visa programs available for you to choose from, depending on the type of work you’ll be doing in Canada.

The types of work visas Canada has to offer are the open work permit and the employer-specific work permit. The main differences between the two are:

  1. Open Work Permit - you’re able to work for any Canadian employer and in any location in Canada.
  2. Employer-Specific Work Permit - you’ll have certain restrictions working on this visa, such as who you can work for, your position and location.

Let’s take a look at the different programs you can apply for a Canadian work visa through.

Open Work Permit

1. Post-Graduate Worker Permit

If you’ve studied in Canada at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) then you may be eligible to apply for an open work visa through the Post-Graduate Worker Permit (PGWP). The PGWP visas are usually valid from eight months to three years. This is all dependent on the length of your study program.

An advantage of this program is that you can gain Canadian work experience and eventually apply for Canadian permanent residency through programs such as the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).

Employer-Specific Work Permit

1. Temporary Foreign Worker Program

The Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) has several different work visa streams in which you can apply for a Canadian work visa. This stream concentrates on Canadian employers who want to hire foreign nationals with in-demand skills. Getting a visa through the TFWP also means that you’ll be treated fairly and have workers' rights when you work in Canada. This is especially important when working in a new country.

Streams available under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program include:

  • In-Home Caregivers;
  • Foreign Agricultural Workers; and
  • Global Talent Stream.

The important thing to remember is that you’ll also need a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) with an employer-specific work permit. This means that your employer will need to provide a letter stating there aren’t any Canadian citizens or permanent residents available for the specific role.
