The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) have revealed plans to increase the validity of work permits under the International Experience Canada (IEC) program. The IEC program gives an opportunity to countries with a bilateral youth mobility agreement with Canada to allow eligible citizens who are between the ages of 18-35 to work in Canada under any of these categories: working holiday, Youth professionals, and international Co-op.
Work permits are valid for 24 months, however, the duration depends on the particular category the permit was issued or the participant’s country of citizenship. Currently, no work permit extensions are allowed under the IEC program, however, there are scenarios and other situations that make it possible for work permits under the IEC program to be extended.
These scenarios are as follows:
- Administrative errors were made relating to the validity period of the work permit.
- The Validity period of the participant’s passport is shorter than the validity period of the employment offer.
- The validity of the participant’s health insurance is shorter than the validity of the employment offer.
- The validity period of the offer of employment is shorter than the maximum period allowed. (same employer and employment).
