How to Apply For a Canadian Visa from the UK
Canada is no stranger to the UK. The two countries share a sovereign, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. They work closely together in many international organizations and share the same values in areas like gender equality, health and education. Each year, between 6,000 and 9,000 UK citizens become permanent residents of Canada.
In this blog, we share tips on how to apply for a Canadian Visa from the UK, whether you want to live, study, work in/or visit Canada.
From a Canadian Visa to Permanent Residency
A Canadian Visa allows you to enter Canada for a specific reason, and for a specified period of time. For example, if you want to come to Canada to study for more than 6 months, you will be issued a student permit for the duration of your course and an electronic travel authorization (eTA) which allows you to travel to and enter Canada. You really must be mindful to renew or secure permits prior to the expiry date of your visa or eTA to avoid being blacklisted from the country.
Many UK citizens live in Canada with a Canadian Visa and then decide later on that they want to make Canada a permanent home. Read below to find out how you can become a Canadian permanent resident.
How to Immigrate from the UK to Canada
The Express Entry system is a popular, and fast way for UK citizens to make a permanent move to Canada. The system processes applications for permanent residency for four different immigration programs, namely the; Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Trades Worker Program, Canadian Experience Class Program and some Provincial Nomination Programs.
Each of these programs have eligibility criteria known as the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) which awards points for:
- CLB Language proficiency (English and French)
- Level of Education (In and outside Canada)
- Work Experience (In and outside Canada)
- Arranged employment
- Provincial Nomination achieved
- Siblings living in Canada as permanent residents/citizens
- Your spouse’s profile (if married)
The highest scoring applicants are given Invitations to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency during an Express Entry draw that takes place every two weeks. Your application/profile in the Express Entry system will stay active for one year from the date you applied. This gives you ample opportunities to increase your CRS score, for example by finding a job in Canada (50-200 points) etc.
Canadian Visa to Work in Canada from the UK
There are more than 700 UK firms that have a presence in Canada, and for this reason, many UK citizens need to travel to Canada for work-related purposes, and for that they require a Work Visa. To apply for a Canadian Visa to work in Canada, you’ll most likely need to submit the following documents with your application:
- Proof of employment or current studies
- Proof of valid job offer from a Canadian employer
- Proof of income and funds
Brits who want to work in Canada can apply to one of three Canadian Visas. They are;
- Employer Specific Work Permit
- Open Work Permit
- Working Holiday Program
The majority of UK citizens work in Canada with an employer-specific work permit that allows them to work for one employer for a pre-approved time period. This means you’ll have to obtain a valid job offer before you can start working in Canada.
On the other hand, an Open Work Permit allows you to work for any employer within Canada, and you don’t need a valid job offer to be eligible for this Canadian Visa. However, it is only issued to people in very specific situations. For example, if you apply to immigrate to Canada while you’re in the country, you can apply for an open work permit that lets you keep working while you wait for the results of your permanent resident application.
Last, but definitely not the least, the Working Holiday Visa is exclusively issued to young Brits between the ages of 18 and 35 who would like to work part-time in Canada while travelling in the country.
Canadian Visa to Study in Canada
Canada is a popular country for UK students because they can expect to receive a world-recognized qualification with a lower price tag. Average fees for an undergraduate degree in Ontario, Canada is $6,463 and a postgraduate degree is $7, 056 as of 2020. Canada offers both cheaper and more expensive options than the UK, dependent on your program of study and choice of institution.
If you’d like to gain a Canadian qualification take the first step by enrolling at a designated learning institution to receive a letter of acceptance which is a required document when you apply for your Canadian visa.
What is a Designated Learning Institution?
Designated Learning Institutions are post-secondary education institutes that are authorized by provincial or territorial governments to accept expat students. Currently, there are approximately 1534 DLIs throughout Canada. Most of these DLIs are situated in the provinces of Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, and Alberta.
