Have you ever wondered about how to immigrate from the United Kingdom to Canada? Now you can get all the answers with our comprehensive guide. Learn all you need to know to start your journey to the Great White North.
The first and most important thing is to choose where in Canada you want to live as this will have a bearing on whether or not you may be able to secure a provincial nomination, or if you may eligible for an entirely different immigration program.
Once you know where you want to live and work, you will need to find out whether you are eligible for Canadian immigration, and which immigration program would be the best route for you to take.
This quick step by step guide will give you a general idea of the process you will go through when you apply for permanent residency in Canada:
- Meet the basic requirements to apply
- Get your documents ready
- Apply for a medical examination;
- Apply for language exams
- Get police clearance;
- Biometrics for Canada
Step 1 - Know Where You Want to Live
Because Canada has 13 different provinces and territories to choose from, you must find a province that is the perfect fit for you. For example, if you are a computer software programmer, you should consider the province of Alberta because it has been called the silicon valley of Northern America. Not to mention that most people in the tech industry get paid at least 35% better in Alberta than anywhere else in Canada.
Another reason you should think hard about your choice is that there are a number of immigration programs that are only offered in certain places in Canada. An example of this is the Atlantic Pilot Program which lets skilled and semi-skilled workers immigrate to PEI, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador with a very limited set of requirements.
We can put you in touch with one of our account managers who can give you more information about each province’s visa programs so you don’t have to do the research yourself. Simply click on the chat box in the bottom right corner of your screen to start chatting with one of our agents.
These are popular visas and programs to apply for:
Skilled Federal Worker Program;
Canadian Experience Class;
Provincial Nominee Programs; and
Because Canada intends to invite over 2.2m people by 2023, there are more than 100 immigration streams and programs that have been created and optimized to help assist with finding skilled workers from around the world. The programs above are just a few of the more popular ways that people have made Canada their home over the years.
Step 2 - Basic Requirements
The majority of all visas, programs, or categories will make sure that you meet at least the following criteria.
One, you have no criminal record or any pending cases against you. This can be anything from a DUI charge to not paying alimony. You can apply for a Police Clearance Certificate to make sure that you have no outstanding charges against you.
Two, most visas for work will require that you have the right amount of work experiencein your field. Applications will state the NOC (National Occupational Classification) level and code you can apply for, for example, the Federal Skilled Worker Program lets you apply if you have a job under NOC level 0, A, or B.
Three, if you plan to live in Canada as a permanent resident, then you must prove that you can speak at least one of Canada’s two official languages, English and French.
You must be prepared to take exams to prove your skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening in these two languages. The exam you can take for English is the IELTS General (International English Language Testing System) exam.
You must only take the IELTS Academic exam if you plan to study in Canada.
An accepted French exam is the TEF (Test d'evaluation), just make sure you also select the General exam for immigration purposes.

Your TEF exams will cost around £345 if you apply with the Alliance Française de Londres but there are other companies you can apply with.
Language exams are valid for two years when you apply for Canadian immigration, make sure your results are valid before you apply.
Step 7 - Biometrics
If you do not know what biometrics are, it is the new identification system Canada has introduced this year. It is an easy way to show who comes into and leaves the country’s borders.
This is done through facial and fingerprint identification and is valid for up to 10 years.
