Is life in Ghana not allowing you to fulfill your full potential? Are you looking for a country where you and your family can start over? With goals to welcome over a million foreign nationals to the country within the next three years, Canada is at the top of the list for many international workers, not only for its growing quotas but also its high standard of living.
According to the 2018 World Happiness Report, Canada ranks as the 7th happiest nation in the world and remains a safe haven for immigrants around the world. This can be attributed to the wealth of diversity, multiculturalism, and world-class cities that allow residents to flourish. If you need more reasons to immigrate to Canada from Ghana, read on to find out more about how this great country compares throughout aspects of everyday life.
Why Immigrate to Canada?
While Ghana has a nationalized healthcare system, there are some regions that are not catered to under this system. Canada on the other hand, not only attracts the best medical professionals from around the globe but also has the best healthcare facilities to be found. The best part of the public healthcare system is that it’s free, making your medical needs a breeze to address.
Civil Rights & Quality of Life
While Ghanian citizens have basic health care provided, the infant mortality rate in Ghana is still at a relatively high 39 per 1, 000 live births versus only 4.5 in Canada. The average life expectancy (men and women combined) is also only 67-years-old while in Canada it is a high 82-years-old. This aging population is beneficial to immigrants, however, because of the gaps in the labour market that form as a result. This also means that Canada’s free public healthcare system is functioning well, providing assistance to citizens and residents across Canada more effectively than a lot of other national healthcare schemes.
In terms of civil rights, a lot of Ghanaians have been forced to leave the country due to the growing animosity surrounding LGBTQ+ rights. In Ghana, it’s against the law to have same-sex relations while in Canada, it’s not only freely accepted but there is even room for same-sex couples to immigrate together under the spousal sponsorship program.
Stable Housing Market
If you’ve dreamed of owning your own home, you will know that Ghana has heavily taxed property. You may also not be able to afford the housing in more affluent centers where the standard of living is higher. However, in Canada, immigrants are free to buy a property upon achieving permanent residence and because the country is so big, overcrowding is not an issue. Houses in safe, clean areas in smaller regions start from around $170, 000 CAD.
If you’re searching for more opportunities, you will find much more than mining when you immigrate to Canada from Ghana. While the country relies heavily on natural resources for most of its GDP, there is considerable growth happening in tourism, technology, and energy. At any time there are over 500, 000 jobs available across the country in a variety of different sectors. Unemployment is not an issue here with unemployment rates as low as 5%.
In order to see if you are eligible to fill the immigration quotas presented by the federal government, you can check the National Occupation Classification (NOC) list which details the 0, A, B, C, and D occupations, some of which are in demand across the country or in a specific region.
Canadian Immigration Programs
There are many ways to immigrate to Canada, including Family Class sponsorship as well as post-graduate work permits through studies in Canada. However, the most popular pathways are Canada's Express Entry system and the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).
Express Entry System
The Express Entry system was created in 2015 to fast-track (in as little as six months) the three federal programs. These are the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class. These were introduced as a means of combating growing labour market shortages across the country in skilled occupations.
In order to apply, candidates need to create an online profile through the Express Entry system, stating which of the federal programs they are applying under. From here the profiles will be measured according to the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) which is a set of criteria used to determine eligibility. The highest-scoring candidates will be drawn from the Express Entry pooland issued with an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence in Canada.
CRS Criteria Awards Points For:
- CLB Language proficiency (English and French)
- Level of Education (In and outside Canada)
- Work Experience (In and outside Canada)
- Arranged employment
- Provincial Nomination achieved
- Siblings living in Canada as permanent residents/citizens
- Your spouse’s profile (if married)
Provincial Nominee Program
Most of the provinces and territories in Canada (11 out of 13) participate in the PNP. These programs were designed to address specific labour market shortages happening locally in these regions that could not be filled by citizens. Each of these 11 provinces offers its own streams for unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled workers to settle in that province. To apply, candidates need to create a profile/submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to the province’s immigration body, stating their stream of choice.
