Initial records show that the first Ghanaians came to Canada in the 1960s with the current population at around 60, 000 in the present day. As a Ghanaian immigrant, you will be pleased to find that all the things you miss from home can still be found in Canada, including fashion, food and music. The only difference is more opportunities in fields not necessarily recognized in Ghana, better average pay and plenty of national benefits for all permanent residents living in the country.
The Canadian government already offers over 70 different immigration programs for unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled workers looking to start over in Canada. The addition of more streams and the increase in quotas for these pathways help governing bodies to meet goals of welcoming over a million foreign nationals within the next three years. The biggest population of Ghanaian expats can be found in the famous city of Toronto in Ontario. While English is the official language in Ghana, those who are native Akan, Kwa, Hausa and Twi speakers can find a multitude of language workshops in almost every community in Canada.
There are also prominent Ghanaian organizations for the purpose of supporting expats living in Canada. These include the United Ghana Association of Ottawa, the Ghanaian Canadian Association of Ontario and the Opportunities Centre for Ghanaian Canadians which set up sporting events, computer assistance, employment training, counseling, art and other cultural enrichment. Want to Immigrate?
As mentioned above, there are many ways to immigrate to Canada with easy and efficient pathways provided by different programs. The most popular avenues, however, are the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) and the federal programs under Express Entry. Opt to get Canada immigration help with one of the following streams to ensure that you are on your way to starting a new life.
Provincial Nominee Program
The PNP was designed in order to address specific labour market shortages happening on the ground in specific provinces and territories across Canada. These occupations cannot be filled locally and need foreign nationals to pick up the slack. One of the main requirements of the PNP is that candidates must intend to settle in the province or territory of their choosing indefinitely for the nomination to benefit the region effectively. Browse through our list below to see if any of these streams appeal to you or fit your skill set.

Express Entry System
Express Entry is a term used for the system that umbrellas the three federal programs which was implemented in 2015 to fast-track (in as little as six months) the application process. These programs are the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program and the Canadian Experience Class.
To start an application through this system, candidates need to choose which of the programs they will be applying for and make sure they are eligible under the individual criteria outlined. From here, candidates need to create an online profile which is scored according to the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Applicants in the Express Entry pool with the highest scores are then issued with an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.
CRS Criteria Awards Points For:
- CLB Language proficiency (English and French)
- Level of Education (In and outside Canada)
- Work Experience (In and outside Canada)
- Arranged employment
- Provincial Nomination achieved
- Siblings living in Canada as permanent residents/citizens
- Your spouse’s profile (if married)
